Students Harassed on Social Media

Project Overview: There was a period of time during the spring semester of my sophomore year at Wesley when, for whatever reason. several anonymous Twitter accounts began “exposing” embarrassing things about several students and insulting them. As soon as one account would get shut down, another would soon take its place within a day or two. I decided to write a story about the phenomenon; I interviewed students who’d been attacked by the account, as well as other students who’d just seen the Tweets on their timeline.

Goals: I wanted to highlight people’s reactions to the tweets and show that the majority of us didn’t like what was going on. I also thought it was important to get the reactions of the people who’s actually been targets, since cyberbullying is often thought of as a victimless crime or “just jokes” by the perpetrators.
